Sensory packs to level the playing field for JackJumpers fans

Sensory packs to level the playing field for JackJumpers fans

Basketball fans with sensory challenges are in for a gamechanger, with not-for-profit health insurer St Lukes and the Tasmania JackJumpers teaming up to provide sensory packs at home games.

Many Tasmanians are affected by sensory overwhelm that can make it hard for them to enjoy loud, crowded events.

The sensory packs include a weighted blanket, noise cancelling headphones, a fidget spinner, sunglasses and ear plugs, and will be free to borrow for the duration of the game.

St Lukes Events and Partnership Manager Nikki Long said the organisation had worked with an occupational therapist to create the bundles, which will be available at MyState Bank Arena to anyone who needs one.

“As part of our Diversity and Inclusion partnership with the Tasmania JackJumpers, we’re proud to be providing these sensory packs to help more people comfortably watch home games,” she said.

“We know the game-day atmosphere can be overwhelming. Those with sensory challenges shouldn’t have to miss out on the excitement and the community connection that comes from supporting their beloved JackJumpers and feeling part of the team.”

It is the first step towards a more inclusive game-day experience, with St Lukes also working with the Tasmania JackJumpers to develop a custom quiet space at MyState Bank Arena for those who might need some time out.

“We’ve taken inspiration from mainland venues who are doing this really well and are proud to be bringing this initiative to JackJumper’s games,” Ms Long said.

“We hope other sporting codes and organisations can adopt similar practices to create more inclusive environments all over Tasmania. Lifting everyone’s participation, connection and wellbeing supports St Lukes’ vision to make Tasmania the healthiest island on the planet,” she said.

JackJumpers CEO Christine Finnegan said the initiative was a testament to what can be achieved when like-minded organisations come together with a shared vision.

“Partnering with St Lukes to provide sensory packs ensures that more fans can enjoy the unique atmosphere of JackJumpers games,” Ms Finnegan said.

“Together, we’re taking important steps to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome and supported.”

Packs will be available from the MyState Bank Arena info desk, starting from the December 5 home game. ID is required to borrow a pack, to be returned at the end of the game. They will be available for adults and children, and a St Lukes membership or a medical diagnosis is not required.
