Giving your children the best start to success

Giving your children the best start to success

At St Lukes, we want to ensure that your child has the best start to their education.

Children learn through watching – whether it be through playing with their peers, reading, writing or working on a computer or iPad.

Children rarely report that they have problems with their eyes. So why not make sure your child’s vision is 20-20 and take them on a trip to the optometrist.

Why see an optometrist?
Optometrists are trained to assess, diagnose and treat eye conditions. If your child is having problems with their vision, they may fall behind in developmental milestones or potentially develop blindness without intervention.

Your optometrist will conduct an eye test to find out.

Signs your child may need to see an optometrist
There are many ways your child may demonstrate that they are having problems with their eyes. Some of these include:

  • Difficulty seeing words clearly in books, or closes one eye to see or read better
  • Frequent blinking or squinting
  • Sensitive to light
  • Rubs their eyes more than usual
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Avoids activities that need close vision
  • Poor hand-eye coordination
  • Sits too close to the TV and holds books close to their eyes.

According to raisingchildren.net.au, it is a good idea to take your child to see an optometrist every two years, starting before they are six months of age.

How do I find an optometrist?
St Lukes has partnered with digital health company HealthShare to assist you in making more informed decisions when choosing a treatment provider.
